Dr. Katherine Kuhn

Principal of Safford PreK-8 Community School

Dr. Katherine Kuhn began her career in education to learn how to support her son with a disability. After close to a decade as the Vice President of Operations and Marketing for a large Assisted Living and Retirement Center and a brief time as a Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf, her career path was derailed when her son was diagnosed with Autism. Working as a Family and Student Advocate for individuals with Autism, she decided to go back to get her Doctorate in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Special Education.

Her career as a Special Education Teacher began in Juvenile Corrections, as the In School Suspension Teacher. She moved on to be a Self-Contained Teacher for High School students with Emotional Disabilities, then to an Inclusion Specialist and behavior specialist. Moving to become a Curriculum Specialist and then into a role as Assistant Principal in a Blue Ribbon, A+ Charter School helped develop her love for data and academic excellence. However, it is her love for working with students and families who face obstacles and trauma that keeps her in this field.

In 2021, Dr. Kuhn became the Principal at Safford PreK-8, a Community School of Excellence. In 2021, Safford was a failing school with many behavioral, social and academic challenges. This is where she grew to love the model that focuses on Community, Family, and Students  and with Title One Schools.
